Now on Instagram …

So I decided to grasp the nettle and set up an instagram account that’s focused on my work wearing my author hat – I’m at @literallyandrewmaynard (I must confess I “borrowed” the naming concept, but I rather like the play on words!).

Embarrassingly, I discovered in the process that I’ve set up – and promptly forgotten about – two other Instagram accounts over the past several years. Fingers crossed I’ll be more diligent this time round!

The Aerosol Calculator

Back in the late 1990’s, a close colleague and friend Dr. Paul Baron developed the “Aerosol Calculator” — an Excel spreadsheet that contained pretty much every equation imaginable (at the time) related to airborne particle behavior.

The Aerosol Calculator became legend, and an essential tool for anyone working in aerosol science. It contained over 100 equations for calculating aerosol behavior, drawing from the books Aerosol Measurement (edited by Baron and Willeke, and later Kulkarni, Baron and Willeke), and the equally legendary Aerosol Technology by Bill Hinds.

Why study science and technology policy at ASU? Ten reasons …

As chair of the Master of Science and Technology Policy program at Arizona State University, one of my responsibilities is making sure potential students know about the program, and how it aligns with their career goals and aspirations.

To help get the word out, we’re working on a series of short videos that explore ten reasons why someone might be interested in the program. And because I really don’t like polished corporate video content, these are not your usual recruitment videos 🙂

We already have the first two up (not in order of course – why think in straight lines when you don’t have to!), and there will be eight more to come over the next few weeks.

Check them out here – irrespective of whether you are a science and technology policy geek, or just want some light entertainment!

TEDxASU 2020

This week’s big news is that I will be speaking at this year’s TEDxASU – which just keeps on getting bigger and better!

More details to come over the next few weeks, but the event is being held on April 4, the theme this year is Flux, tickets go on sale on February 13, and the full lineup of speakers can be found on the TEDxASU website!

Oh, and my talk? I’ll be talking about the future as an object …

Notes to self …

I haven’t written a regular blog for years — not since I started writing more polished articles for places like The Conversation, and was seduced by the lure of writing trade books. And of course, social media has changed the whole dynamic around online communication, leaving blogs feeling a little long in the tooth.

And yet, I’ve missed the chance to keep an online log of my thoughts and ideas, or simply what’s going on in my life. And so I thought it would be an interesting experiment to get back into the habit of regular writing — as much as a weird combination of therapy and writers discipline as anything.

These, then, and really my notes to self — snippets of thoughts, ideas and reflections that I find useful to collect for my own use, but that others are free to peruse if they so wish.

Unlike pretty much everything else I write, I’m writing for myself here, not for others. Of course, you’re welcome to browse through and read the posts — they are, after all, out there where anyone can find them. But at the end of the day, this is my personal reflection space, that just happens to be public!
